Backyard Poultry and Incubation
There was a long felt need among the farmer, farmwomen and rural youth to start the production of poultry birds. Backyard poultry is a part of livelihood among the farmwomen. However, low egg production and weight gain is the major problem in the back yard poultry. KVK conducted various programme to improve the status of backyard poultry for the farmwomen. For this purpose KVK sehected two breeds of poultry, Giriraja for weight gain and RIR for egg purpose. Two families from each selected village given chicks of Giriraja and RIR for backyard poultry to up-grade the local flock of poultry. The results of the breeds were encouraging.
This
promoted the farmwomen to purchase the eggs of Giriraja an
Through the Giriraja and RIR are most suitable for back yard poultry, they do not have habit of broodiness. There is a problem among the farmer to get a broody hen in all season. KVK solve this problem of hatching by installing small unit of hatchery. Every month 15-20 farmers are benefited by purchasing of Giriraja and RIR chicks for backyard poultry. There are 200 back yard poultry units of Giriraja and RIR established in the surrounding villages. Each farmer is rearing 25 to 50 in the backyard. There is a good demand and response for the chicks and eggs of Giriraja and RIR. KVK is now planning to expand this unit.
Problem - Low egg production in backyard poultry
- Low wt gain in backyard poultry
- Lack of broody hen
- Lack of vaccination8/span
- Lack of feeding & watering mgt.
Innovative
Practice Adopted by Farmer-Preparatio
Yield and Economic Benefits-Due to up gradation of local poultry with RIR breed there is increase in egg production by 50 percent and due to Giriraja meat quality is improve. Regular vaccination result decrease in mortality. Homemade feed preparation reduce the cost and improved the FCR ratio.
Future Plan-KVK in future will provide day chicks of Giriraja and RIR in large quantity for rearing commercially local bird production unit for rural youth so that they can get sufficient income.
Semi
Stall-fed Goat Rearing
Rural youths are in dilemma to
choose a enterprise for self employment though traditional goat farming seen in the almost all villages of Ahmednagar district, farmers
used to keep some local breeds of goats with them.
The common goat breed reared in these villages is non-descript which
gives less milk yield with less weight gain and twins . Similarly for these
goats, they are neither adopting proper feed, breed nor deworming and
vaccination management.
Common practice among the farmers is whole day grazing
of these goats .
KVK
made an intervention to improve this enterprise by conducting short durational
training programmes for rural youth,. Similarly
exposure visit were organized on
goat feed, breed and health management. More
emphasis was given on
Osmanabadi goat breed and up-gradation in selected non –descript
goat breed by osmanabadi pure buck and
given the knowledge about
semi stallfed goat rearing concept.
Due to semi stall feeding feed and health management was improved and
saved 50 percent expenditure on fodder . Earning
of Rs. 1500/2000 from 25+1 units as additional income besides getting pure goats
manure for their farm.
With the constant efforts made by KVK, the attitude and knowledge level of rural youth regarding goat rearing has increased. This has helped them to accept this occupation. These rural youth are ideal source for generation of self employment to other rural youth of nearby villages.
Contract farming in Broiler Production - for self employment generation
Though Rural youths are well literate but
they are unable to ascertain the enterprise for self employment .
After survey it was observed that there is lot of scope for broiler
production in the villages due to fresh ventilation clean water supply besides large scale assured market.
The KVK has intervened and identified contract farming in broiler poultry
production as an assured income
generating enterprise for the rural youths.
For effective intervention KVK conducted long duration training programmes and
made linkages with private poultry secter viz.Venkateshwara,Saguna,Amrut chicks
for contract farming for KVK
trained trainees.
KVK has conducted 6 long durational
training programmes for 165 trainees. Due
to training and demonstrations awareness was increased about con tract farming
in broiler production with private sector which provide chicks, feed and medicine
and after 40 days purchases Rs.3 to
3.50 per kg on live weight and FCR basis and changed their attitude.
They acquired skills through learning by doing at KVK demonstration unit.
The technology has been adopted by 10 per cent of youths Now in the radius of 20 km there are 27 poultry unit having capacity of 5000-10000 poultry birds on contract farming basis .These self employed rural youth earning Rs 10000-15000 per lot
