Success Story
The Ahmednagar District lies in the scarcity zone, which covers more than
90 per cent of the total cultivated area. This area being rainfed with average
annual rainfall not exceeding 450 mm, farmers had little option but to grow only
rainfed crops like Bajra and Jowar or to keep the land fallow in the Rabi and
summer. The Krishi Vigyan Kendra realizing the water scarcity provided crop
diversification programme for the farmers in the Dryland area with prime focus
on Dryland crop like Drumstick. The local cultivar was short, with less pulp and
had wide fluctuations in the varietal performance. The KVK took initiative and
procured the high yielding Drumstick variety PKM-2 from TNAU Coimbatore. The
crop was best suited for rainfed situations and could sustain the yields for 4
to 5 years. Initially the KVK planted the drumstick crop on a demonstration plot
of one acre with the new variety. The demonstration plot started giving yield
from six months onward itself. Thus the KVK made available the seeds and
seedlings both since the plantation in August 1997. A wide extension and
publicity was done with publishing in widely read agricultural magazines,
newspapers, FM Radio and Television etc. The technology was thus disseminated
not only through published material but the seed and seedlings were also made
available for the farmers. The dissemination of technology thus met with
widespread results. The farmers who took seeds and seedlings were able to reap
monetary benefit ranging from 22,000/- acre to 45,000/- per acre in the Dryland
pockets of Ahmednagar District.
The
KVK has sold 175 kgs of seed with an estimated cropped area under drumstick of
351 hectares due to sale of seed while 36.7 hectares area due to sale of
seedlings. The KVK has been able to disseminate the technology of drumstick
cultivation to all the 31 districts of the Maharashtra state with maximum area
in Ahmednagar district covering more than 500 hectares.
The KVK has also standardized the technique of pruning in Drumstick crop, which is widely being adopted in almost all the areas wherever the seed or seedlings have been supplied by the KVK. The farmers are also adopting the refinement made with respect to plantation of drumstick seedlings.
The KVK has given prime focus on dissemination of technology through conduct of 32 Training programmes, 12 crop demonstrations two on-farm trials, one State-Level Seminar and use of other electronic media like FM Radio, Television, Internet, telephone.
The KVK Babhaleshwar has thus become a prime source of technology and inputs for Drumstick cultivation within the State of Maharashtra with an estimated farmer beneficiaries of more than 18,600 directly and indirectly due to sale of seeds and seedlings and consultancy & advisory services for the drumstick growers.
