Frontline Demonstrations

1. Introduction of Improved Drumstick cultivar PKM-2

The demonstration plots have given an increase in 140% yield. The area due to plantation of new drumstick cultivar has increased significantly with more and more farmers prefering PKM-2 Drumstick over other varieties due to its adaptation to drought condition.

2. Chelated Zinc & Iron Supplementation with Vermicompost in Guava grown in Calcareous soils

The application of Zn+Fe with vermicompost has been able to overcome the leaf bronzing and chlorosis to an extent of over 90%.

On Farm Testing

1. Effect of Vermiwash Solution on yield and quality of Guava grown in calcareous soils

The Guava growers are facing prolonged drought situation. The usual water stress required for initiation of flowering has prolonged due to scarcity of water. Under such conditions the use of vermiwash coupled with Foliar Potassium application is being tested to get optimum yields under such conditions. The use of vermiwash has led to an increase in yield from 1 to 6.3 per cent due to the intervention.

2. Effect of optimum fertilizer use for control of onion bulb neck and size.

The use of timely and balanced fertilizer use in Onion has been another area of fruitful adoption of improved practices in case of Onion. The problem of neck size enlargement in Onion has been a major bottleneck in rabi onion. The KVK has after taking successful trials during previous year has been able to disseminate refined practices modifying the package of fertilizer recommendations with increased 10kg/acre K application along with timely sprays for Thrips control in Onion. There were more than 72 inquiries on Onion alone leading to improved productivity and enhanced bulb quality. The major achievement of the improved package was the reduction in Onion neck size due to optimum fertilizer use and maintenance of thrips population well under economic threshold level.
