Spirulina
Spirulina, commonly referred to as 'spi', is a tiny, one cell algae. It is believed to have been the first form of
plant life on earth. Originally it was found in alkaline lakes in Mexico and Africa, but has also been found in
India inLake Lonar in Maharashtra.
Simplicity's Spirulina Farm is situated near the sea, though this is not specifically necessary for spi
farming, as we don't use sea water at all. Since its re-discovery in the 1960s, spi has been exhaustively and
extensively tested by scientists around the world, and is found to be the most powerful and well-balanced source
of nutrition available on the planet. Under the microscope, this micro-organism has the form of a spiral, which
explains its name. Its scientific name is Arthrospira.
Application of Spirulina
-Spirulina is significantly effective not only in keeping good health but also improving various symptoms of diseases, satisfied various nutritional requirement.
-Spirulina is richest food source of complete protein with more than 60%protein, it is being used in the diets of malnourished children, adults and sportmen.
- Sufficient quantity of iron has proved a boon for anaemic mothers and children, it is useful in prevention of anaemia
- Spirulina , due to its anti oxodant nature scavenges free radicals. 90% of degenerative diseases uch as diabetes, cataract, antherosclerosis, arthritis, aging andcancer are caused by free radicals)
- Spirulina is richest food source of beta carotene, which is higher than any other known sources of beta carotene, which strengthen the immune system, prevention of cataract and any eye disorders caused by vit. A deficiency.
-Spirulina is the only food source of Gamma linolenic acid other than mother’s milk. This acid prevent the accumulation of fats and cholesterol which reduces blood pressure and inhibits thombosis by dilating blood vessels. Also control body weight.
-Spirulina is richest food source of vitamin B12, chlorophyll, which is more than any other known sources of vitamin B12.
- It has an anti aging property.
- Spirulina promote skin metabolism and reduce scars formation and accelerate wound
healing.
- In cosmetic industry using as natural colour in lipsticks, eye shadows, eye liners.
- Spirulina being rich in protein, beta carotene and vit.E is being used in the preparation of antiwrinkle cream, antipimple lotion and face packs.
Spirulina is perhaps the only plant on this planet to have multifacet applications in day to day life of each and every one in developing and developed countries both. Cheap and esily vailable spirulina seem to be the only the alternative to the complete food which is diminishing at the fast rate , cocurrent with increase in population , more so in developing countries.
Uses of Spirulina
1. Cosmetic Industry
2. Dietary Supplement
3. Pharmaceuticals
A. Therapeutic Applications- Diabetes, Hypercholesterolemia, Hepatitis, Pancreatitis, Arthitis, Obesity, Wound healing

algae. As it grows photosynthesis it may be classed with vegetable foods. It
grows naturally in fresh water. It has a highest nutritional value. Since
several centuries people in different parts of world have consumed this algae as
food. In 1974 in United Nation – World Health Organization (WHO) declared
